Why Inverness?

As one of the most desirable places to retire in Florida, Inverness is known for its lively downtown and historic Courthouse Square. This small-town city is a walkable, bicycle-friendly community, with plenty of access to social life and medical facilities. Inverness also has one of the lowest tax burdens of all Florida cities.

The sunny city is surrounded by vast groves of citrus trees, verdant forests, tranquil lakes, and beautiful landscapes, making outdoor recreational activities endless. It’s also full of great food choices, inviting pubs, and cozy shops. Some of the most popular attractions in Inverness are:

1. Withlacoochee State Trail

This 46-mile long paved multi-use trail is perfect for walking, running, hiking, or cycling. The Withlacoochee State Trail passes right by the city’s waterfront on Lake Henderson and Cooter Pond, extending further into several towns, including Trilby, Istachatta, and Citrus Springs. Access points along the trail include picnic spots, restrooms with drinking fountains, and ample parking opportunities.

2. Old Courthouse Heritage Museum

Take a glimpse into the region’s incredible history at the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum! Nestled in the heart of Historic Downtown Inverness, the Museum showcases an array of award-winning exhibits that focus on the artifacts and pioneering days of the city. On top of general admission, the Museum hosts special events and programs such as a monthly concert and a Coffee and Conversations Series.

3. Fort Cooper State Park

Home to Lake Holathlikaha, this 710-acre nature reserve is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, paddle boating, fishing, and swimming (when water levels are high enough). The surrounding terrain also offers self-guided trails for hiking, some of the country’s best bird and wildlife watching.
